What's Changed from PhotoLooks 1
This page goes over features and tools from PhotoLooks 1.0, PhotoLooks 1.1 and PhotoLooks 1.5 that have been removed or deprecated. Please also read What's New in PhotoLooks 2 if you have used earlier versions of PhotoLooks and are looking for specific features.
Changes to the PhotoLooks interface
PhotoLooks 1 used the term 'LooksBuilder' when referring to the PhotoLooks interface that opens. In PhotoLooks 2, this interface is simply called 'PhotoLooks'. Simpler, huh?
We still offer the ability to open PhotoLooks as standalone software or as a plug-in within many popular host applications. In PhotoLooks 1, a graphic card with specific capabilities was required to run the software properly. PhotoLooks 2 moved to GPU/CPU rendering switch, which eliminates this need. Read more in System Requirements.
Save and open presets is different
In PhotoLooks 1, there were File menu items for Save Look As and Open Look File, which let you save and open a custom PhotoLooks preset. Those functions are still available but they are no longer menu items.
To open a look, you now manually open the preset file from your User directory: /Library/Application Support/LooksBuilder/PhotoLooks
There is no longer a Trash icon to throw away a custom preset. To delete a look, you now manually throw away the preset file from your User directory: /Users/(name)/Library/Application Support/LooksBuilder/PhotoLooks
No Advanced I/O processing
We removed the Advanced I/O processing and related tools. There are no longer Input, Output or Preview panels. These controls were intended for unusual color workflows or media formats, so you could access the underlying display and linearization transforms for the PhotoLooks engine. The I/O system has been replaced with a simple Gamma processing.
Any I/O tool settings are effectively burned into a PhotoLooks 1 preset and are not editable or removable. The I/O tools will continue to render the same as they did previously.
Continued support for PhotoLooks 1 presets
Full editing and rendering of PhotoLooks 1 presets are supported. However, the PhotoLooks 1 tools do not appear in the Tool Drawer. The PhotoLooks 1 tools will appear in the Tool Chain when a related preset or project is opened.
When editing PhotoLooks 1 presets, all tool settings from PhotoLooks 1 will be available for editing. This includes the Gamma control which is removed for the matching PhotoLooks 2 tools. This excludes Advanced I/O controls which have fully been removed from PhotoLooks 2. It is not be possible to update an old PhotoLooks 1 tool to a PhotoLooks 2 tool.
PhotoLooks 2 can open and load PhotoLooks 1 .ls3 look files. However, Look 1 is not able to open PhotoLooks 2 files. Once saved in PhotoLooks 2, the .ls3 look file becomes a PhotoLooks 2 file and changes to the file extension '.mblook'.
Deprecated tools from PhotoLooks 1
The following tools are deprecated for PhotoLooks 2.0. They will load into the Tool Chain when you open a PhotoLooks 1.0 file, However, they are not available in the Tools Drawer to use on other projects.
• Lift/Gamma/Gain
• Offset/Gamma/Gain
When opening a PhotoLooks 1 project, these tools will appear with their Gamma controls. These tools are still present in PhotoLooks 2 but now have the Gamma control removed.
• Crush
• Curves
The 3 Way Color Corrector tool is still in PhotoLooks 2. However, it has been renamed the Color Ranges tool.
